Meet James Hoss — The Mind Behind SudokuPulse

SudokuPulse was founded by James Hoss, a competitive Sudoku solver and puzzle designer with over 15 years of experience in logic puzzles. James has competed in national-level Sudoku championships and has spent years studying the mathematical structures that make Sudoku puzzles both challenging and solvable.

“I built SudokuPulse because I wanted a place where anyone—from complete beginners to advanced solvers—can find well-crafted puzzles and genuinely learn how to get better. Every technique guide on this site comes from real solving experience, not just theory.” — James Hoss, Founder & Sudoku Expert

Background & Expertise

James discovered Sudoku while studying mathematics in college and quickly became obsessed with the logic and patterns underlying every puzzle. What started as a hobby evolved into competitive solving, and eventually into designing puzzles and teaching solving techniques.

His areas of expertise include:

  • Advanced solving techniques — from naked singles to X-Wings, Swordfish, XY-Wings, and alternating inference chains
  • Puzzle grading and difficulty analysis — understanding what makes a puzzle easy, medium, hard, expert, or evil
  • Teaching and educational content — breaking down complex strategies into step-by-step guides that anyone can follow
  • Puzzle design and generation — creating puzzles that are fair, solvable without guessing, and appropriately rated

Every technique guide, strategy article, and puzzle on SudokuPulse is reviewed by James to ensure accuracy and clarity.

Our Content Philosophy

SudokuPulse isn’t just another puzzle site. Every piece of content is built on three principles:

  1. Accuracy first — All techniques and strategies are verified against established Sudoku solving theory and tested on real puzzles. Our 27 technique guides are reviewed against academic sources and competitive solving standards.
  2. Clarity for all levels — Guides are written so that a beginner can follow along, while still providing depth for experienced solvers. Our technique progression guide maps out exactly what to learn and when.
  3. Practical examples — Every technique page includes worked examples with grid snapshots so you can see exactly how each strategy applies to a real board.
